Upper gastrointestinal surgery addresses cancers and chronic disease of the stomach and esophagus.

Stomach cancer and esophageal cancer are treated with surgery that is planned around tumor stage and location, often as part of a combined treatment plan with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. GIST tumors of the upper GI tract are also within this focus.

Chronic conditions including peptic ulcers and esophageal diverticula are managed surgically when they cause persistent symptoms or complications that cannot be controlled with medication alone.

Why timely assessment matters

Tumours of the digestive system often cause few or no symptoms until they are advanced. A prompt surgical opinion establishes whether an operation is possible, how much healthy tissue can be preserved, and in what order surgery, chemotherapy, and other treatment should be given. A second opinion is worthwhile even when an operation has been ruled out elsewhere.

What to expect
