Liver surgery spans primary liver cancers, cancers that have spread to the liver from elsewhere in the body, and a range of benign liver conditions.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma are the primary malignant conditions treated, alongside liver metastases originating from colorectal and other cancers. Careful pre-operative planning of the remaining healthy liver volume is essential to a safe resection.

Benign conditions — hemangiomas, adenomas, focal nodular hyperplasia, cysts, and echinococcal (hydatid) cysts — are also managed surgically when they cause symptoms, carry a risk of complications, or cannot be reliably distinguished from malignancy without removal.

Why timely assessment matters

Tumours of the digestive system often cause few or no symptoms until they are advanced. A prompt surgical opinion establishes whether an operation is possible, how much healthy tissue can be preserved, and in what order surgery, chemotherapy, and other treatment should be given. A second opinion is worthwhile even when an operation has been ruled out elsewhere.
